Richard & Son is often that you can head into your local store to check out washers and dryers in person, but that option is very limited in this case. P.C. Richard & Son locations are limited to just New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut, so you&#;ll need to treat them as an online-only retailer if you don&#;t live in one of those states. If you live in the local delivery area of a P.C. Richard & Son store, though, you can enjoy free in-home delivery, unpacking, and placement in a room of your choice (but not installation). All deliveries outside that area costs a flat rate of $199 for curbside delivery, so it&#;s important to factor that additional cost in when comparing prices. Amazon provides some benefits that make it worth your while to consider the internet&#;s largest retailer when you&#;re shopping for your next washer and dryer. A large selection (especially of compact and portable models), fast and free shipping, and a customer-friendly return policy all set Amazon apart from other options. While Amazon doesn&#;t have as wide a range of appliances available as most big-box stores and dedicated appliance retailers, they do carry full-sized models from popular brands like Kenmore, Samsung, GE, and Speed Queen, along with compact models from Equator. Most ship for free, and while they usually don&#;t qualify for same- or next-day delivery, shipping options are typically pretty speedy. Amazon&#;s reputation for customer-friendly returns extends to appliances, with a very generous 30-day return policy that isn&#;t limited to damaged or malfunctioning items. They do recommend you check for damage at the time of delivery and refuse delivery if the appliance is damaged, but they allow returns within 30 days of delivery for any reason at all&#;including damage you didn&#;t notice at first. Some things can get more complicated with Amazon than with other appliance sellers, including potential warranty issues. Some appliance brands only honor their warranties when the washer or dryer is bought from an authorized retailer, so be sure to check that you&#;re not purchasing a model from a third-party seller on Amazon before you make a purchase. White-glove delivery and installation services are sometimes available through Amazon at an extra cost as well, but that&#;s something you need to check on the product page before you buy the washer or dryer, and it isn&#;t guaranteed. You may need to hire someone separately to install your new appliance. Their return policy is more generous than most big-box stores too, with the option to return yours within 30 days. Returns can get complicated, since you need to ship the appliance back, but it&#;s still a better policy. Installation and haul-away options are a little more complicated and vary based on the brand you&#;re shopping for, but it&#;s typically about $50 for installation and another $50 to haul your old appliance away or move it to another room. Wayfair offers a variety of financing options for high-ticket items like washers and dryers, and you can check your available options through a single application. We like that AJ Madison offers free, basic delivery without requiring any additional purchases, but it is somewhat limited. Free delivery is only available if you spend at least $1,299 on your washer and dryer, and installation isn&#;t included. Installation is available at an additional cost, and they also charge extra if you have stairs, the appliances weigh more than 300 pounds, or you live in a remote location. While there are some downsides to buying a washer and dryer from an online-only retailer, we think the huge selection of brands and models offered by AJ Madison makes it a great place to shop for a washer and dryer&#;especially if you&#;re looking for a high-end brand or a brand that&#;s difficult to find. AJ Madison offers financing through Synchrony, including interest-free payments if you pay off the balance within a specific amount of time. They also accept payment through Affirm, which is a service that allows you to make installment payments on large purchases.
Best Buy is primarily known for electronics, but they also have a large selection of appliances like washing machines and dryers that are available both in-store and online. They carry brands like LG, GE, Samsung, and Whirlpool, along with well-regarded brands like Speed Queen and Electrolux, and their own Insignia brand that often includes advanced features at relatively low prices. One of the best things about shopping for a washing machine and dryer at Best Buy is their designer consultation service. The service is available in-store by appointment, and also in the convenience of your own home through a virtual meeting. If you&#;re having trouble deciding what you need, or what will work best in your home, Best Buy&#;s professional designers will help you come to the right decision. Best Buy has a lot of physical stores in addition to their website, too, so you can shop online to identify models you&#;re interested in, and then head to a brick-and-mortar location to see them in person. They don&#;t offer free delivery or installation, but delivery and installation are available for as low as about $30. Hauling your old appliance away isn&#;t free, either. Best Buy does offer that service, but it&#;s a more expensive service compared to other retailers at about $60. Best Buy offers financing through the My Best Buy credit card, in addition to a no-credit-needed option through Progressive Leasing.
Returns are limited and need to be initiated within 48 hours, but unopened, undamaged items that are still in the original packaging may be returned within 30 days, making their policy a bit more flexible than other retailers&#;. Lowe&#;s offers financing through the Lowe&#;s credit card and Lowe&#;s Pay, which is a buy-now, pay-later option with flexible payment plans.
For example, you&#;ll find Miele washers and dryers at Lowe&#;s&#;and some other big-box retailers, like Home Depot, don&#;t carry that brand. Similarly, you won&#;t find washers or dryers from Magic Chef, Midea, or Hotpoint at Lowe&#;s. While Lowe&#;s typically doesn&#;t offer free shipping, delivery fees are usually quite low (about $30 for major appliances like washers and dryers). Installation of your new appliances isn&#;t free, but is usually included for no extra charge if you buy an installation kit as well. If you need your old appliance hauled away, they also offer that service for an additional fee.
Lowe&#;s is also a big-box store with lots of brick-and-mortar locations, so it&#;s again a good choice if you want to shop online and then check out your options in person. Lowe&#;s also carries a large selection from GE, LG, Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, and other popular brands. They carry a lot of the same brands as other big-box retailers, but they do have some brands others don&#;t, and lack some brands that others have.
Specific brands will vary from one physical store to another, but the big names are available to check out in-person at most local stores, and you can order online even if your store does not carry a particular brand or model. We like that Home Depot offers free shipping on most washers and dryers, but the catch is that you do need to pay for an installation kit (typically about $30 to $40). Home Depot also charges extra if you want them to haul your old appliances away or move them to a different room; you may want to check with your local garbage company to see if they offer free appliance pick-up instead. That said, one benefit of shopping with Home Depot is they have a low price guarantee where they will (with certain restrictions) match the price of any competitor. They also let you cancel any online order up to 72 hours before the delivery date with no charge. But, any returns after purchase are less flexible&#;major appliances only have a 48-hour return window. What to Look for in a Washer and Dryer Retailer

The average cost of a washer and dryer ranges from about $800 to $2,500 or more. Smaller models with basic features and cycles cost less, while models with larger capacities (think: as much as 6 cubic feet for a washer and 9 cubic feet for a dryer) and advanced amenities, like smart features, will cost more.
