Custom vs. Standard Seals: How to Choose

Standard Seals

You can find more information on our web, so please take a look.

Standard, or stock, seals are reliable and efficient, offering quality and performance at your fingertips. Designed to meet industry standards, they provide effective safety and corrosion prevention in conventional operating conditions involving a range of temperatures, pressures, and fluids. These seals are readily available, ensuring rapid delivery for quick replacements. While they are often more cost-effective than custom seals, this does not compromise their quality or performance, making them a practical and dependable option for many applications.

Benefits of Stock Seals

  • Speed of Delivery: These seals are in stock, making them readily available for immediate use. This quick availability is a significant advantage when you require urgent replacements or have time-sensitive maintenance needs. The ability to ship these seals quickly minimizes downtime in operations, ensuring that machinery and processes can be back up and running with minimal delay.
  • Proven Reliability: Stock seals &#; particularly from reputable suppliers &#; have a well-documented performance record. They are widely used across various industries, so their reliability and effectiveness have been tested and proven. This track record gives you confidence in your choice, knowing that these seals have consistently performed to meet industry requirements and standards.
  • Ease of Replacement: The ubiquity of these seals makes them easy to find and replace. This ease of replacement is a considerable advantage for maintenance teams, as it eliminates the need for extensive research or the intricacies associated with customizing seals for specific applications. Their standardized sizes and specifications mean that finding the proper seal is straightforward, simplifying the maintenance and installation.
  • Cost-effectiveness: Being mass-produced, these seals are generally more affordable, especially when ordered in bulk, making them an attractive option for managing operational costs. Additionally, their uniform sizes and specifications, simplify inventory management. This uniformity offers a cost-effective advantage by reducing the complexities and expenses of maintaining a diverse inventory of custom solutions.

Reliability Consulting: Guiding Your Seal Selection

Reliability consulting is pivotal in determining the most suitable seal solution, whether standard or customized. This service includes:

  • Analyzing Specific Needs: Consultants begin by thoroughly understanding your application&#;s unique requirements and challenges. This initial step is crucial for tailoring the consulting process to address specific operational needs.
  • Performance Evaluation: A critical aspect of reliability consulting is assessing why existing seals might be failing or underperforming. This evaluation helps pinpoint underlying issues, essential for recommending an effective solution.
  • Expert Recommendations: Based on a comprehensive analysis and testing, consultants provide informed guidance on whether a custom or standard seal would be more effective. These recommendations are grounded in technical expertise and industry experience, ensuring the advice is trustworthy and applicable to you.

Oil Seal / Rotary Shaft Seal Materials

Oil seals are used to seal around a rotating shaft and keep an oil-based lubricant inside an axle, engine, etc. Grease seals are used to seal more viscous grease lubricants in rotary shaft applications. In simplest terms, an oil seal is a barrier with four functions; retaining lubricants or liquids, excluding contaminants, separating fluids, and confining pressure. These seals help to keep the machine running as smooth as possible. Oil seals from Custom Gasket Mfg. can be used for any type of machinery that seals hydraulic fluid; pumps, automotive, cylinder manufacturers and more.

Custom Gasket Mfg. provides rotary oil seals and shaft seals in a variety of styles, sizes, and materials to appropriately suit your application. Our selection of fluid sealing products are available in a comprehensive range of rubber polymers including Nitrile (NBR), Viton®, Fluorocarbon (FKM), Silicone (VMQ), Neoprene®, Chloroprene (CR), Ethylene Propylene (EPDM), Polyacrylic (ACM), Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR), Fluorosilicone (FVMQ), Polyurethane (AU/EU), Hydrogenated Nitrile (HNBR), and Methyl Vinyl Silicone (MVQ). Our oil seals are produced from the highest quality springs and cases made from carbon steel, stainless steel or FDA Approved stainless steel. All products are manufactured according to ASTM D standards. Custom Gasket Mfg. can supply custom oil and rotary shaft seals to your OEM drawings and specifications.

Oil Seal Common Styles

If you are uncertain of the oil seal style you require, please feel free to send us an actual sample of your seal and Custom Gasket Mfg. will reverse engineer the seal for you. We offer cost-effective alternatives to brand name seals and have been able to consistently provide our customers with premium quality seals at significant savings. The most common oil seals styles used are; TC, SC, TA, SA, TB, SB, and VC. Oil seal types TA, SA, TB, and SB all have bare steel on their OD widths. Custom Gasket Mfg. can process the widths in different options; ground OD, highly polished bright steel, coated OD and painted with a rubber to fill in small cracks in the OD housing. The other types of common seals have OD widths that are rubber covered.

V-Rings (V-Seals)

Custom Gasket Mfg. provides V-Rings for shafts requiring a dynamic seal. They are flexible rubber seals that stretch-fit onto the shaft and rotate with the shaft against a counter face. The body of V seals rotates with the shaft and holds itself in position by its elastic fit around the shaft. Sealing is produced by the contact between the lip and the face. The V-Ring seal has good sealing action when the shaft is asymmetric and/or there is some misalignment. They are specifically designed to protect the primary seal from contaminants. They provide excellent protection against all types of liquid, grease, oil, dirt, and other foreign materials.

Custom Gasket Mfg. also offers V-Ring Sets which are used as piston seals. They consist of a top seal, three middle rings, and a bottom seal. We supply them in Nitrile / Buna-N (NBR), EPDM, and Viton®, and we are well tooled for common dimensions.

Wiper Seals (aka Dirt Wipers)

Custom Gasket Mfg. provides custom wiper seals. A wiper seal is an axial seal that prevents contamination while allowing a reciprocating shaft to pass through the seal&#;s inner bore. A wiper seal&#;s primary task is to prevent the corruption of particles in the hydraulic system. They are often used for eliminating fluid contamination and to prevent dirt from entering a reciprocating shaft mechanism. Wiper seals are typically used on hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders and telescopic suspension forks for motorcycles and bicycles. Wiper seals are also manufactured from over 15 polymers including: Nitrile / Buna-N (NBR), Fluorocarbon (Viton®, Fluorocarbon (FKM), Silicone (VMQ), Fluorosilicone (FVMQ), Polyurethane (AU/EU), Natural Rubber (NR), Ethylene Propylene (EPDM), Hydrogenated Nitrile Rubber (HNBR), Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR), Chloroprene (Neoprene®), Urethane, and Teflon®.

End Cap Series & Gamma Rings

End caps are designed for applications where the shaft does not pass through the housing wall of the bore. The end cover provides protection for the bearings. The covers are designed to fit into housing bores for rotary shaft seals. They have the same tolerances as those for the O.D. of a seal. The inner housing is carbon steel and the outer seal is nitrile rubber. Industries that typically use end covers are gearbox, automotive, agricultural equipment, exercise equipment, trucks, buses and trailers.

Custom Gasket Mfg. specializes in providing high-quality custom oil and special seals for the gearbox industry. This industry uses End Caps VK, VK-HP (HP is high pressure), Gamma Rings RM and RO.
