I've said it before and I will say it again: UV and ozone serve similar purposes. Invest in a quality UV system first and evaluate its effects on your setup. Only then should you consider ozone if you really feel it’s necessary. From my experience, UV sterilizers can be quite effective, and ozone is not always essential in this hobby.

With about 20 years of experience using both UV and ozone technology, I’ve found that having a reliable UV system, properly set up with correct flow rates, can yield results comparable to those achieved with ozone.

If you're keen on using both UV and ozone together, I recommend AquaUV products, as they offer superior UV sterilizers and bulbs.

Keep in mind that contact time is critical for both ozone and UV. However, they require different flow rates. For UV, you might need to push 600 gallons per hour, but that flow rate is not effective for ozone systems in our setups. Although it's your money, I believe this approach would be imprudent.

In my opinion, a high-quality UV sterilizer combined with a separate ozone reactor is the best course if you insist on using ozone. My experience shows that ozone does little for disease management, and UV cannot prevent or control ich. I can attest to this firsthand, as an ich outbreak severely impacted my fish population despite having a quality UV system in place.

A UV system can help mitigate ich in its free-floating stage, but a majority of the parasites can settle in the substrate or attach to hosts before passing through the UV. Moreover, using a UV system for parasite control via a manifold connected to the return pump is inefficient, as much of the water just recycles through the return loop.

Contact time is also a concern when routing all return water through the UV. Ideally, a closed-loop system that draws water directly from and returns it to the display tank (bypassing the sump) is optimal for parasite control. Alternatively, running UV systems between two separate tanks can also help prevent the transfer of parasites between systems.

FAQs on Ozone Water Treatment

Ozone has been used for over 100 years for preserving food and ingredients, as well as in the brewing industry for purification, odor control, and medical applications. It effectively eliminates all bacteria, algae, and biofilms without the risk of resistance or toxic residues, making it ideal for direct food and drink applications.

Ozone is a potent sanitizing and fumigating agent, capable of disinfecting food in storage and during transport, thus preventing the growth of bacteria, mold, and yeast on food surfaces and controlling insects. Additionally, it removes undesirable flavors caused by bacteria and chemically eliminates ethylene gas, which slows down ripening and extends distribution.

For cleaning fresh fruits and vegetables, the practice generally involves washing in ozonated water, which is then recaptured and treated through filtration and ozonation. This treated wash water is free from bacteria, color, and suspended solids, allowing for recycling and reducing water usage. Unlike conventional halogen-based washing systems, ozone-based processes do not produce chemical residues that pose a risk to the environment and groundwater.

Ozone is frequently used to disinfect bottled drinking water due to its solubility and efficacy against microorganisms through oxidation of cell membranes. It uniquely auto-decomposes, leaving no toxic residues, providing bottling plants with a way to disinfect water and extend shelf life without chemical additives.
