It's challenging to differentiate between grey and ductile cast iron just by looking at them. A more reliable method is through microstructural analysis. Grey iron exhibits higher thermal conductivity (46 Watts per meter) than ductile iron (36 Watts per meter). This higher thermal conductivity makes grey iron suitable for uses like cookware, while ductile iron is better for applications like gas cylinders.
Grey iron excels in dampening vibrations, making it ideal for machine frames and parts subjected to dynamic stresses. Ductile iron doesn't dampen vibrations as effectively but offers other advantages like higher tensile strength and ductility.
Although ductile iron is viewed as an enhanced form of grey iron due to its superior strength and flexibility, grey iron continues to be preferred for specific applications owing to its own set of advantages.
