Copper has a higher melting point, according to the Internet on lasing metals. It also is one the of the most heat conductive metals we have… makes it great for cooking… but not so great for lasers.

The new Mitsubishi lasers can cut brass and copper. We have one, we can cut it. They have technology that resolves the beam reflection issue. A lot of CO2 based lasers don't have that capability. Other option is to find some one with a fibre laser. Again due to the wavelength of the beam copper - brass will not cause a reflection issue. This will cost more than normally laser cutting of mild steel, as the cut speed is a lot less. But we can and do offer it. Only thing is were in the uk hence its probably cheaper for you to find a local vendor.

There's a lot more going on than simply closing the shutter. If the shutters shut, your just dumping the laser beam to the cooling circuit. Pluss the shutters a lot slower than the speed of light bouncing to the work piece and back. Its a lot more about managing the actual reflected energy and lowering the laser output energy. A lot of lasers do not - can not do this in real time due to how they work. The Mitsubishi can.
