Chucks vs Collets - South Bend Lathes

Unless you know in advance that you will be making large numbers of small parts that can take advantage of the collets I would wait to get them when you need them. Of course, a set of seven Morse taper collets is the "special of the week" over at LittleMachineShop.com

If I were only going to buy one work-holder it would be a four-jaw chuck because it can hold the greatest variety of parts, but you'd get annoyed with centering everything PDQ. It's just slow, even if you only loosen two of the jaws to chuck up the next piece, you still need to check your centering regularly. I think a modicum of quality is required, even in a four jaw, just to have everything work smoothly, so if you want to save money you might try used and worn over import.

The advantage of an adjust-tru type chuck is repeatability, once you have it adjusted for a certain size stock, you can expect the next piece of the same size to be accurate as well. If you chuck up different size material then you change position of the scroll and undo your adjustments.

I hope that gives you some more info to think on.

I'd recommend a three and a four jaw chuck also. Collets won't allow you to do anything that a chuck can't, but chucks will do much that collets can't.Unless you know in advance that you will be making large numbers of small parts that can take advantage of the collets I would wait to get them when you need them. The Benefit of Collect Chuck VS 3- Jaw Chuck

A CNC collet chuck is mounted to the front of a CNC lathe spindle, using the machine&#;s existing collet and drawtube to move the workpiece.

The jaws of the collet chuck open and close due to the axial motion of the hydraulic actuator's piston. As the piston travels back and forth, the drawtube moves in lockstep with the piston, forcing a wedge-shaped plunger within the chuck body. The plunger, in turn, transfers axial action into radial motion, allowing the jaws to open and close. The jaws' gripping force on a workpiece is proportional to the actuator's output, therefore it may be readily controlled with a pressure valve.
