Bob, that pump has 2 cartridges - 14gpm & 21gpm. Is the 21gpm one for the hydraulic system and the smaller one for the transmission..?To the OP. Things get a bit complicated when it comes to the pumps. It's a vane pump which doesn't like dirt, so if you have (or had) leaking hydraulic cylinders that could well be what's taken your pump out.You may have to dig under the floor in your tractor and get a Part Number from the pump. I'm showing a pump P/N 7J-4634 which is cancelled, therefore that would imply that spare parts are no longer available for it and if your pump is that Part Number then replacing it would be the only option. There is a later pump which is the replacement for 7J-4634 which is a 9J-5058. Spare parts are available for that pump but what complicates things is that there are 2 variantions of 9J-5058 (Type 1 & Type 2) and each verison uses different cartridge Part Numbers. Cat do not do a Reman pump, so you would be working with a hydraulic shop or other supplier.I would suggest that you first identify what Part Number of pump you actually have. Once you have that then go shopping for parts for it. Try Offroad Equipment www.offroadeq.com for parts.

1. I am not a seasoned operator like so many on here, but I believe it is fine to pull one steering clutch in a cut. You will know you have gone too far when opposite track spins. Some of the best advice I have received (on here in fact) is idle it 15+ minutes before working and 15+ minutes again before shutdown. I use this time to walk around and see if anything looks different than last time, check engine oil, look for oil dripping, refueling, etc.
2. Check input shaft coupled to crankshaft pulley (if it's a front mounted tank), any place there is an o-ring (hoses piping etc.), seam around tank halves, and pistons which might be dinged or losing their chrome or have bad seals. Evidence should be readily visible.
3. I use 40w diesel engine oil front to back in my 47A, except in clutch I was bullied into using TDTO 30w by the gurus here. Frankly I didn't notice a difference but you are PS anyway so shouldn't apply.
4. Mine clacks at idle though I sure hope it is not pistons slapping. More of an upper end injector noise or maybe they all do that. Clears up at working rpm. Once warm it is not that noticeable.
5. Easy starting and low oil consumption are good signs. I think a certain amount of blowby is normal.
Now to the questions.
1. I have run many machines in construction but very little time on a dozer. I don't want to hurt the machine. Should the track clutches stay fully engaged when in a cut or can I slip one side to cut an arc? Any other useful advice to keep it healthy?
2. My hydro system has to be leaking somewhere as the tank was pretty much empty from just sitting. I know the cylinders leak a bit but the hoses are higher than the cylinders so I am not sure where the oil is going. Thoughts?
3. Since I had to add hydro oil, I am curious what the D7 likes? My book is the the tractor only with no hydros so it was not covered. I added 15w-40 because that is what I run in the excavator. Seems to run good with that. I also added some tractor hydro oil I had as I figure the D7 probably just has a gear pump and just two cylinders and probably not that picky?
4. I ran the machine for a brief time today but I notice quite the clacking from pistons slapping at idle. Goes away with RPM but curious how these girls should sound?
5. This machine has around 10K hrs on it which, from what I read, is about the rebuild time for these. Curious what signs I might check for it see if the engine has been touched? It seems strong but I don't really have any seat time. Judging purely off starting, exhaust, blowby, etc.[/QUOTE]
