Subject: Mini-Excavator Brush Rake
Please visit our website for more information on this topic.
Hey Guys,
It seems that there has been some interest in brush rakes recently, so I thought Id post a couple pictures of one we built a couple of weeks ago. Obviously, I sized it to fit our mini-excavator, which is about a 10,000 lb machine. The teeth are fabricated out of AR400 1 steel plate and the tube is DOM steel with an O.D. of 5.5 and 3/8 thickness. The bottom piece is 1.5 cold rolled round. The steel and cutting cost a total of $925. Brother welded everything up with rod in about 6 hours.
I wanted to make the rake as light as possible, so I tried to design it so the worst case scenario stresses would stay under ½ of the materials yield strength. The result is a rake that weighs in at around 300 lbs.
We have only used it a couple of times now, but so far the rake has held up to everything the excavator has dished out. The most important attribute, however, is it has made handling and burning brush a rather pleasant experience. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask and thanks for viewing.

Just curious how much an "off the shelf" rake would cost if you bought one??? With steel prices soo high how much did you save???

Great job Mav. Quality materials and everything. I doubt you'll be hauling that back to the farm to do a bunch of time consuming straightening and rewelding. Nice size machine. It always amazes me what a machine that size can actually do. Aint hydraulics great.?!

I am not really for sure what a similar sized rake would cost. A while back I did some searching for brush rakes and it seems that only one website actually listed some prices. I seem to think the model for a Deere 50D was somewhere around $3,000 plus the cost of shipping. Also, I think the lighter model for a 35D was around $2,000 plus the cost of shipping. But really, the deciding factor for us to build it hinged on the concept that it would specifically be tailored to our machine.
Lastly, it is amazing what those little hoes will accomplish. They cannot always do what the bigger hoes can do, but with a little persistence they can sometimes yield similar results.

Just curious. I know that I have looked into building attachments before and the cost of steel made it almost as cheap to just buy.

Looking to buy root rake for excavator. Was wondering which one to get a scoop or one that's more like one that goes on a Dozer. Will be running with thumb.

Reed I'm not educated on these things enough to know what I'm looking at there. Do you use a "pin grabber" type attachment to change from the bucket? I've thought about getting a rake attachment but wasn't sure how much trouble it was to change out without a quick change type attachment that would add complexity for us. Thanks for posting.

Yes we have a pin grabber on the machine.

Do you have a thumb? I bet that scoop rake would be handy with one. Might be able to pick up bigger trees with it. Half the time you wouldn't even need the regular bucket for cleaning tree lines of light trees I would bet.

My opinion would be to go with the top one, we converted a wheel loader rake to fit our machine and it works great, the profile of the bottom scoop design might not let you grab individual logs firmly, your thumb could be up against the times and still leave an empty void. You will still be able to grab a large amount of material with the top one. Just make sure you give them the dimensions of your thumb so that the rake and thumb match up at the bottom

I also have the style made by USA Attachments. I take the rake off and use the two prongs to dig stumps. I would buy it again, I have not been able to hurt it.

U need a rake that is wide enough to let dirt pass through or otherwise u end up with a bucket. The quick coupler is nice but not needed. My thumb matches the end of the 2 Center teeth it's a fast tool

I say top one (less curve) for a hydraulic thumb and bottom one for a fixed or no thumb. Good looking rakes regardless of what you choose.

Looks like a good Canadian Co. Beware the made in China rakes. If you have a hoe with some size you will tear it up. How much is it?
I have a NYE rake that I gave way to much for but it has held up. It's more the scoop style. I think spacing needs to be tight between the teeth like what you are looking at. Certainly no wider. When you are sifting thru burn piles, debris, etc you don't want chunks falling thru. We use it for that and dressing up a job.
My next attachment is going to be one of those two prong stump pullers

We are running a D/S rake on our machine and very happy with it. Well built and simple.
