HDPE is the cheapest machinable plastic available. One inch HDPE costs about $250 for a 48"x96" sheet. The price is proportionate to the cubic inch, allowing you to extrapolate for various sizes. So far this year, I have purchased thirty sheets of one-inch HDPE. Today, I sent three sheets to the big scrap pile in the sky. It's so inexpensive that wood would cost more.
Conversely, UHMW is denser than HDPE. Cutting UHMW with an endmill or saw produces manageable chips, but single-point tools create problematic stringy chips. Chipbreakers are ineffective; interrupted cuts via stop-and-start methods are necessary.
I recommend contacting Sabic Polymershapes or Curbell Plastics. I personally use Sabic due to my local representative, though they were formerly General Electric Polymershapes and Cadillac Plastic.
For low-stress applications like handles, stick with HDPE. UHMW is approximately 20% more expensive without significant benefit for such uses.
