Screw presses are designed to extract liquid from organic materials. The modern screw press features a screw, which acts as the pressing mechanism, encased within cylinder walls that have a screened surface. The organic materials are squeezed by these presses as they are forced against the screened surface or other filter media. The primary function of a screw press is to separate solids from liquids for most applications. However, there is another type of screw press that serves a different purpose. Screw presses can be categorized into three main types. The first category includes screw presses without openings in the barrels surrounding the screw, which means they do not separate liquids from solids. The third category includes screw presses that remove free liquids from materials. These presses are utilized across various industries, including pulp and paper, where they are used to separate water from cellulose fiber, and in the food industry to extract alcohol solutions from substances like pectin, soybean protein, and xanthan gum. Other key applications involve separating water from waste streams in food processing factories, spent brewer’s grains from breweries, and orange peel from juice production facilities.
